A location QR code encodes GPS coordinates or an address in the geo: URI format, or as a Google Maps link if you want more control over the displayed label. Scanning it drops a pin on the user's maps app (Apple Maps on iPhone, Google Maps on Android) and optionally starts navigation. This is invaluable for any business or event where your location is hard to find or isn't yet indexed in mapping databases.

Practical scenarios: a pop-up shop at a non-standard address, a construction site entrance, a park pavilion for an outdoor event, a vacation rental that sits at the end of an unnamed lane. Printing the QR code on event tickets, confirmation emails, or welcome packs means attendees spend less time confused and more time at the actual location.

If precision matters, use GPS coordinates rather than a text address. Coordinates pin the exact spot, whereas addresses can map to the wrong entrance of a large building complex. Will this open Apple Maps or Google Maps?+

On iPhone, the native geo: URI opens Apple Maps. On Android, it opens Google Maps. If you want to force Google Maps on all devices (including iPhone), encode a Google Maps URL (maps.google.com/maps?q=...) using our URL QR code generator instead. That is the best way to ensure a consistent cross-platform experience.

Can I use GPS coordinates or just a text address?+

Both. GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude) pin the exact spot on the map, which is useful for locations that do not have a conventional address, like a park pavilion, a farm entrance, or a construction site. A text address is easier and works for most commercial locations, but may resolve to the wrong entrance on large campuses.

How accurate is the location pin?+

GPS coordinate accuracy depends on the coordinates you provide, not the QR code itself. If you pin a location in Google Maps and use those coordinates, the pin will be exactly where you placed it, typically within a few meters. For a text address, accuracy depends on the geocoding service in the user's maps app.

Can I include navigation instructions or just a pin?+

A standard location QR code drops a pin. The user's maps app can then initiate turn-by-turn navigation to that pin in one tap. If you want to link to a specific route, encode a Google Maps directions URL as a URL QR code instead. You can pre-specify the route mode and starting point.

What if my location is not on the map yet?+

This is where GPS coordinates shine. If your building, pop-up location, or event space is not yet indexed in mapping databases, GPS coordinates will still drop a pin in exactly the right place. New construction, remote campsites, and temporary venues work well with coordinate-based location QR codes.

Can I use this for my Google Business Profile location?+

You can, but for Google Business specifically, you are better off using the Share link from your Google Business listing. That URL shows your full business profile (hours, reviews, photos) rather than just a map pin. Encode that URL as a URL QR code. Reserve the location QR code for when you just want to share coordinates.

How do I get the GPS coordinates of a location?+

In Google Maps on desktop: right-click any point on the map and select 'What's here?' The latitude and longitude appear in the info card at the bottom. On mobile: tap and hold to drop a pin, then the coordinates appear in the search bar. Copy them exactly as decimal degrees (e.g., 37.7749, -122.4194).

Does this work for international locations?+

Yes. GPS coordinates are globally consistent. Latitude and longitude work the same way in every country. Text addresses require the maps app to geocode them, which is reliable for most countries but less so for rural addresses in regions with less mapping data coverage.
